The Bradenton man accused of crashing his pickup at high speed into the main terminal at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport last month remains hospitalized in a coma, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Juan Monsivis, 40, has been in an unresponsive state during the three weeks following the crash that saw his truck go through a wall and into baggage claim at the airport in the early hours of Dec. 19. While Lt. Greg Bueno, a spokesman for the FHP, said the agency cannot comment on his medical prognosis, the investigation remains ongoing as investigators await the results of pending toxicology reports.
Monsivis is a repeat offender with an extensive traffic-related criminal history, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. He has been charged with multiple DUIs and multiple counts of driving with his license either suspended or revoked, with other arrests including charges of unlawfully carrying a concealed firearm, battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, hit-and-run with property damage and possession of synthetic marijuana.
His driver's license had been revoked at the time of the crash, which saw him smash a 2015 GMC Sierra truck through the baggage carousel area and then into the front of the National Car Rental counter, according to FHP.
The crash caused extensive damage at the airport and affected the ceiling, floors, windows, doors and conveyor belts, according to Sarasota-Bradenton International airport President and CEO Rick Piccolo, who estimated that damages totaled in excess of $100,000.
While many of the repairs are already done or near completion, some cleanup still remains, according to Piccolo.
Monsivis was observed by the New College police department traveling north on U.S. 41 in a "reckless manner" before the crash, according to FHP. Security footage shows the truck entering the airport at 2:51 a.m. Dispatch was called to the airport approximately four minutes later.
Officials speculated the driver may have been intoxicated or affected by a medical problem.
