Sukhvir Mavi’s peers view him as a natural people leader and forward thinker, known for his project ownership, commitments and strong relationships with business partners and contractors.
He began his career with commercial flying in the U.S. and Philippines and immigrated to Canada in 2013 for more opportunities and to pursue his career in flight instruction. His career progressed from commercial flying to airline management, airport operations, terminal operations (construction and coordination) and now project management for Nieuport Aviation.
“I’m a people person and the one word to describe my present role is variety,” he said. “I’m not a person who can get into the office and do the same job, the same activity in the same role every day. The best part of my role is working with different teams and stakeholders and different mindsets and different departments. The key thing is the learning. I love that part. Life is all about more and more learning.”
Mavi has developed an impactful career at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ). He’s responsible for airport operations projects (OPEX) while also facilitating capital projects. He’s currently project managing work for the implementation of YTZ’s airport management system (AMS), flight information display screens (FIDS), common use terminal equipment (CUTE) and passenger counting/fill-level Xovis project.
Mavi was instrumental with his contributions related to the multi-million dollar Billy Bishop terminal upgrade project which included the addition of 35,000 square feet of lounge space to the terminal footprint, including an additional new transborder gate, lounge renovation and concessions.
He was able to accomplish this through his collaborative style leadership and his foundation of strong relationships built with contractors, business partners and, most important, stakeholders of the terminal and airport alike.
Mavi is a committee member of operations and technical affairs committee with Airport Council International North America (ACI-NA) and actively participates in multiple aviation seminars and conferences as a volunteer. He also volunteered his time as a welcome team employee at Toronto Pearson.
Mavi is able to deliver multiple projects in IT and construction despite not having a formal education in that area. “It’s all about having the right attitude,” he said. “There will be failures along the journey, but if you have the the right mindset you can overcome it.”
