Arnold Palmer Airport Hangars Destroyed, Church Roof Ripped Off by High Winds

Heavy winds destroyed hangars at Arnold Palmer regional airport, blew the roof off New Kensington church and heavily damaged several other buildings early Wednesday morning.

Nobody was hurt in the storm, according to Westmoreland County 911, which reported several major incidents from around the county. The worst damage happened between 2 and 3 a.m.

Two hangars and an airplane were destroyed by high winds. at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe. Another hangar and airplane were heavily damaged.

The roof blew off St. Mary of Czestochowa church on Kenneth Avenue in New Kensington.

The roof collapsed at George Thomey and Sons construction company on Constitution Boulevard in New Kensington

A tree fell on a house on Clark Hollow Road in Ligonier.

In addition, there were many reports of downed trees and power lines.

More than 30,000 Duquesne Light customers have no power, including almost 4,000 outages in Sewickley and more than 2,000 in Glassport.

More than 11,000 Westmoreland County residents are without power, with Ligonier Township, Ligonier Borough and Rostraver among the hardest-hit communities, according to West Penn Power.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region early Wednesday morning. The service also issued a tornado warning for New Kensington, Arnold and Tarentum. The warnings have been lifted as the severe weather passed.
