Akron-Canton Airport Seeking Artist to Design New Floor
Officials want to hire an artist to help deliver a locally-inspired piece for a section of new terrazzo floor planned for the atrium.
The job pays up to $5,000.
"It's part of this notion of bringing local to the airport in every way, shape or form," airport President and Chief Executive Renato Camacho said.
Artists or teams can contact the airport administration office for project details and requirements. Qualifications and a design proposal are due June 5; a selection will be made the following week.
The review committee includes Robb Hankins, president and chief executive of ArtsinStark, and Nicole Mullet, the executive director of ArtsNow in Akron.
The design is part of a $155,000 construction project to replace old terrazzo in the atrium, beyond the security check. Terrazzo -- first made popular in Italy -- is a composite typically containing marble.
The artwork will be within a 2,700-square-foot section of atrium floor near an existing compass. The new terrazzo will be laid in October.
"It's up to the artist whether to keep (the compass) or go in a different direction," Camacho said.
The design sought will represent a "sense of place" to the Akron and Canton areas, according to airport documents. While a piece that incorporates surrounding counties is welcome, it should focus on Summit and Stark counties, where the airport itself is located.
"(It) should also provide an improved aesthetic element to the airport that tenants and guests will enjoy for the foreseeable future," the documents state.
The artist or artists will work with a consultant, architect and floor contractor already in place for the airport's ongoing gate replacement project.
Included elements should be thoughtful design, efficiency, artistic harmony, a blend of form and function and an element of wayfinding.
In addition, the work must contribute to the architectural and cultural heritage of the region, reflect local customs, styles or cultural attitudes.
Specifications state that, "Understanding the sensitivity of trademark or copyright limitations for some local attractions ... the intent ... is to include likenesses to points of interest such as, but not limited to:"
• Akron-Canton Airport
• Akron Civic Theatre
• Akron's Lock 3
• Amish country (Stark/Holmes counties)
• Canal Park baseball stadium
• Cuyahoga Valley National Park
• Gervasi Vineyard
• Goodyear (blimp or related theme)
• Higher education, medical, polymer, technology, and/or other types of manufacturing
• Historic Onesto Hotel
• Notable past and present figures from the area
• Pro Football Hall of Fame (or related football theme such as yard lines on a football field)
