Sacramento International Airport Sees 9.3 Percent Increase in Passengers in 2019

Feb. 28, 2020

Sacramento International Airport (SMF) continues to see an increase in travelers with 13,172,840 passengers served in 2019 up from 12,050,763 in 2018. The 9.3 percent increase marks the sixth consecutive year of continuous your-over-year passenger growth.

“We’ve added ten nonstop flights and four carriers in the past year giving passengers many more options for flying out of northern California,” stated Cindy Nichol, Sacramento County Department of Airports Director. “We continue to look for opportunities to add routes, improve efficiency and make airport improvements so that Sacramento International Airport remains the best choice for travelers in the region.”

Aeromexico, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Delta Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Volaris all registered double-digit year-over-year traffic growth. The airport welcomed Boutique Air, Contour, Spirit and Sun Country and launched 10 new nonstop flights on eight routes in 2019.

The additional flights were accompanied by capital improvements including modernizing the West Runway and adding a second Economy Lot with 2600 parking spaces. These improvements are necessary as SMF’s passenger numbers continue to grow. The airport also opened ten new retail offerings, including an art gallery.

“Our priority is maintaining the airport’s high level of customer service while growing our operations to make sure we are the airport of choice for travelers from throughout the Sacramento region and beyond,” Nichol said.

The Sacramento County Department of Airport is responsible for planning, developing, operating and maintaining the county’s four airports: Sacramento International Airport, Executive Airport, Mather Airport and Franklin Field. By June 2020, Sacramento International Airport SMF will be served by 15 airlines providing over 180 daily flights to more than 40 nonstop destinations. The regional economic impact of the Sacramento County airport system is more than $4 billion annually. For more information, visit sacramento.aero.
