BOSTON – Officials at Boston Logan International Airport today unveiled a new piece of public art in the United Airlines section of Terminal B. The sculpture, titled “Flyby,” expresses forward momentum and departure, paying homage to flight and themes of movement. The 18’ high x 26’ long x 7’ feet wide sculpture is made of anodized aluminum, powder coated steel, stainless steel.
Award-winning Boston artist Jacob Kulin, creator of the sculpture explains, “there is a celebration of liveliness in Terminal B and Flyby is inspired by this energy and excitement. The asymmetric and geometric patterns that animate the open expanse provide space for art to captivate and connect with travelers. The sculpture echoes notions of transition and flow with its streamlined, telescoping forms, producing a sense of speed and takeoff as the piece seamlessly rears up from the floor.”
“Not many people think of Logan as a place to see public art, but we’re working to change that,” said Thomas P. Glynn, Massport CEO. “Jacob’s piece is unique in that it’s a large metal structure, but it’s not overwhelming. Our passengers can interact with it; they can touch it, run around it or just simply look up. The piece fits so well, it almost feels like the rest of the terminal was built around it. ”
Kulin’s proposal for Flyby was chosen because the design pays homage to the notion of flight and theme of movement. The sculpture rises up from the floor and represents the drama of take-off, forward momentum and departure. The materials used mimic the metallic tones of an aircraft.
About the artist
After graduating from Skidmore College, Jacob Kulin received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art. As a Boston-based sculptor of Danish heritage, Kulin’s longstanding admiration for Scandinavian design has influenced his creative pursuits and the interplay of material remains a primary focus in his work. His creative works of art have been featured in prominent Boston locations including “Modern Dance” which graced the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, and currently underway is an outdoor sculpture for Symphony Park in the Fenway. Music was the selected theme for Symphony Park based upon the site’s name and close proximity to Boston Symphony Hall and Berkeley College of Music. Kulin was awarded the commission by the “Friends of Symphony Park.”
