$12 Million Research Center to Open at Griffiss

Aug. 29, 2019

Rome, N.Y. -- A $12 million technology research partnership between the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Griffiss Institute and SUNY Polytechnic Institute is expected to open at Griffiss International Airport in the spring.

The Open Innovation Campus will help solve complex computing problems for the Air Force by linking researchers from government, industry and academia, Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. said. It will also look to improve computer hardware and software, data protection, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, he said.

“This collaborative environment and business construct is one of the tools we have decided to pursue that I think will aid our researchers in developing future transformational strategic capabilities for the nation’s defense,” said Col. Timothy Lawrence, director of the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate.

The campus will be housed in Building 100 at the airport, the former Griffiss Air Force Base that closed in 1995 and is now owned by Oneida County. The 40,000-square-foot, three-floor facility will be renovated to include two electronic labs, event space, training space and classrooms.

Oneida County will contribute $5.6 million for the renovations. Empire State Development, New York’s economic development arm, will contribute $1.4 million. The state Department of Transportation Aviation Bureau will contribute $1.5 million. Additional funding will come from the Griffiss Institute.
