Hillsboro Airport: $9.1 Million Runway Project to Wrap Up This Fall
Aug. 23--Significant construction work at the Hillsboro Airport, part of a $9.1 million project to repave a runway and consolidate two existing taxiways into one thoroughfare, will wrap up later this fall.
The project rehabilitates the cross-wind runway, one of the original features of the airport which dates back to 1928. The runway's previous significant paving work was 20 years ago.
New directional signage, pavement markings, grading and drainage work, light replacement and fresh asphalt are part of the months-long project.
Goodfellow Bros. Inc. is the contractor leading the project, set to wrap up in October.
Work began on the project in the spring, and was temporarily delayed due to the Oregon International Air Show.
Crews already finished reconstructing the northeast section of the runway prior to the air show. Work on the southwest section of the runway is visible from Northeast Cornell Road.
The primary funding for the project, $7 million, comes from Federal Aviation Administration grants, according to Port of Portland officials. The Port owns and operates the Hillsboro Airport.
Paving and construction work isn't related to the Port's effort to built a so-called third runway at the airport. Port officials said there isn't any new developments on that project since officials handed in a Draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment to the FAA in April.
