Aug. 07--OGDEN -- Ogden wants to adorn the newly renovated terminal at the Ogden-Hinckley Airport with some art, but the planned piece needs extra funding from the city's art account to get off the ground.

The city administration is requesting that the council approve a re-appropriation of $8,500 from the pooled Percent for Arts account to fund a $15,000 art project for the new terminal.

In conjunction with the new commercial air service provided by Allegiant Air at

Ogden-Hinckley, the airport terminal was recently expanded to become compliant with post-9/11 security requirements of the Transportation Security Administration.

The $650,000 project included a new 5,000-square-foot building on the northwest corner of the existing terminal building and features space for security screening, a secure passenger waiting area, and break and office space for TSA personnel.

The proposed art piece will be installed in the interior of the passenger lobby at the airport.

The artists, Josh and Sherry Ferrin, will complete a floor-to-ceiling painting in soft gray tones of some of Ogden's historical landmarks. Six projecting, colored photos of common recreational activities will be placed along the wall to create visual contrast.

The intent of the piece is to market Ogden and encourage travelers to return to the area.

In the late 1990s, a Percent for Arts program -- which allocated 1 percent of certain capital improvement money toward the funding of public art -- was created and later modified so that funding derived from projects where art was not appropriate could be pooled for use on other projects.

With a $650,000 price tag, the airport terminal project generated $6,500 for art -- less than half of the terminal art project's cost -- necessitating the approval of the additional $8,500 for the project.

At the end of fiscal year 2013, the Percent for Arts fund had a balance of approximately $170,000.

The council will vote to finalize the

re-appropriation at an upcoming meeting.
