DFW International Airport, the central hub of American Airlines, will install Islamic foot wash stations inside Terminal D restrooms, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The privately funded project, which has an estimated cost of $300,000, is expected to start on Aug. 31 with a completion date slated for Dec. 31, according to the filing.

The scope of the project "consists of adding ablution stations to existing concourse level restrooms in Terminal D, one men's ablution station in existing mens restroom and one women's ablution station in the existing womens restroom," the filing said.

Terminal D is used primarily for international flights.

Similar wash stations like the ones DFW will install are offered at facilities in Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Chicago O'Hare International.

Heath Montgomery, a spokesperson for DFW Airport, told The News in an email that "like many international airports across Texas and the country, DFW has offered an ablution washing station on the post-security side of its international terminal for years without concerns."

"The airport is evaluating an internal proposal to expand that service to one additional set of restrooms on the pre-security side of the same terminal. While the proposal was brought forward for evaluation to support safe and sanitary access for customers, and to support the airport's growing operations, it remains in the evaluation phase and has not been approved."
