Houston Airports Secures First-Ever Nonstop Service to Rome With New ITA Airways Route
Houston Airports announced that ITA Airways will launch the first-ever nonstop connection between George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Rome Fiumicino Airport beginning May 1, 2026. The service marks a major expansion of international connectivity for Houston and represents the Italian carrier’s ninth destination in North America.
The route will operate three times weekly throughout May, increasing to five weekly flights starting June 1. Service will be flown on the Airbus A330-900, the airline’s next-generation long-haul aircraft.
City and airport leaders said the new connection underscores Houston’s growing role as a global business and cultural hub.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the route strengthens diplomatic, economic and cultural ties with Italy, while opening new opportunities for visitors to experience the city. Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports, noted the service is a milestone that reflects strong demand and the airport system’s growth strategy.
ITA Airways officials emphasized that the new service enhances access not only to Rome, but to 16 destinations across Italy via Fiumicino, along with additional connections through Milan Linate. The airline is expanding its U.S. footprint ahead of its planned entry into the Star Alliance in 2026.
The new route is supported by recent codeshare agreements ITA Airways has launched with United Airlines and Air Canada. Tickets for the IAH–FCO flights are now available for purchase through the airline’s sales channels.
