Just imagine drones, aircraft with no pilots, and supersonic business jets — all flying in/out of airports and dealing with ATC. How long will it take for this to happen? Will it be a smooth transition, or the damndest mess we ever saw?

Seems to me all of this will happen.

But wait a minute — will rockets get involved, too? Well, we already know that an English company plans to build an aircraft/spacecraft that will climb up through our atmosphere drawing oxygen from the air just like an airplane. Once it gets above our atmosphere, it will become rocketlike, feeding on oxygen carried aloft in the aircraft.

Is it an airplane or a rocket?

These are not pipe dreams. These new products are far enough along that we can expect them to happen. Many smart people are putting big bucks into bringing these new products to market.

In the meantime, the growth of LSA — coupled with third-class medical reform — could make flying available to — can it be true? — more people for less money.

How fast can we expect electric airplanes to become commonplace? Will the FBO(s) on your airport be prepared to charge batteries?

And these are just the new products that we can see on the horizon. How many more new ideas will pop out of the woodwork to change aviation and airports forever? A bunch, I bet.

I can’t wait to watch in awe as aviation changes.
