Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has placed six new Striker Volterra 6x6 Electric Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles into service, marking a major step in the airport’s transition toward more sustainable and high-performance emergency response capabilities. The new fleet, manufactured by Oshkosh Airport Products and sold through Siddons-Martin Emergency Group, positions DFW to become the largest Striker Volterra Electric ARFF operator in the country by late 2025.

Daniel White, Chief of DFW Fire-Rescue, said the upgrade reflects a focus on improved response performance. “The Striker Volterra vehicles are faster and more agile than our current fleet,” he said. “Because they are also safe for our firefighters and conscious for the environment, this investment represents a rare win-win-win, delivering operational benefits while ensuring the safety of our responders and the community we serve.”

The Striker Volterra Electric 6x6 combines an Oshkosh-developed electric powertrain with an electro-mechanical infinitely variable transmission. The vehicle can operate in zero-emission electric mode during station entry, standby, and low-speed activity, reducing firefighter exposure to diesel exhaust. For full-power responses, the system automatically draws from both the battery and internal combustion engine to maintain acceleration and pump performance without operator action.

Key specifications include:

  • 0–50 mph acceleration in under 21 seconds (28% faster than comparable diesel models when fully loaded)

  • TAK-4® independent suspension

  • 3,000-gallon water tank

  • 420-gallon foam tank

  • 2,000 gpm water pump

  • 500 lb. dry chemical system

  • Electronic foam proportioning with ECO-EFP™ testing system

The addition of the electric ARFF units supports DFW’s ongoing transition to fluorine-free firefighting foam and aligns with FAA guidance as airports move away from PFAS-based agents.

To accommodate the electric fleet, DFW has upgraded ARFF stations with 480-volt charging infrastructure. All Striker Volterra vehicles include onboard charging systems.

Travis Ownby, sales specialist with Siddons-Martin Emergency Group, said the deployment reflects a broader shift in emergency response. “It’s about helping departments like DFW Fire-Rescue lead the way in operational excellence and sustainability,” he said.

DFW Fire-Rescue supports nearly 90 million annual passengers and is recognized globally for its aircraft fire response training and preparedness programs.
