Eppley Airfield set a single-month record for passenger traffic in May 2024 with 487,205 travelers flying through the airport. The record-setting volume surpassed the previous mark of 486,856 passengers set in June 2018.

The beginning of the summer travel season combined with the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder Annual Meeting and increased flight options in Omaha contributed to the record month. The new milestone is also a 6.9% increase over May 2023 passenger totals.

“Our thriving community, backed by a strong economy, is showing an increased interest in travel,” said Dave Roth, Chief Executive Officer for the Omaha Airport Authority. “Since travel began to rebound after the pandemic, passenger numbers have been on the rise. Airlines are providing more opportunities for travel in and out of Omaha than ever before, and the traveling public is responding with additional demand. While the airport is busier than ever, Eppley Airfield is committed to providing premier customer service and airport facilities to accommodate this growth.”

Construction of the Omaha Airport Authority’s Build OMA Terminal Modernization Program is underway to improve the traveler experience and accommodate long-term growth in passenger traffic. A few of the enhancements will include two additional gates, a new Customs and Border Protection arrivals hall for international passenger processing, an increase to approximately 646,000 square feet from the existing 375,000 square feet, and a single, unified concourse with a centralized Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security screening checkpoint. The $950 million Terminal Modernization Program is scheduled to be complete in 2028.

With Terminal Modernization Program renovation work happening within the Eppley Airfield terminal, temporary walls have been installed in certain areas to contain the construction areas, as well as to keep travelers safe. Travelers will also notice open ceilings in certain areas, as part of the renovation process. To help keep traveler traffic flowing efficiently and minimize congestion, travelers should follow wayfinding signage posted throughout the airport.

Construction of the Build OMA Terminal Drive C Canopy Project is also progressing. Steel columns and trusses have been installed, which will allow for the placement of glass on the canopy later this year. When completed, the project will add capacity to support growth and keep travelers out of the elements. The $65 million Terminal Drive C Canopy Project is scheduled to be complete in 2025.

The Omaha Airport Authority is a non-taxing authority and collects user fees to support the operation, maintenance, and development of airport facilities. No local tax funds are used for airport development or operations. Funding will come from airport revenues, federal grants, and future airport bonds.
