Southwest Airlines Plans First Airport Lounges at Four U.S. Airports
Southwest Airlines is preparing to open its first airport lounges as part of the carrier’s continued push into premium travel.
The airline plans to initially open lounges at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu and Nashville International Airport. Construction is underway, with the first locations expected to begin opening in late 2027.
Southwest is partnering with JPMorgan Chase on the lounge initiative and plans to introduce a new Chase-issued co-branded credit card in 2027 that will provide customers access to the lounge network.
The move represents another significant departure from Southwest’s traditional low-cost operating model. The airline has been adding assigned seating, extra-legroom seats and other premium offerings as it works to attract higher-spending travelers and generate additional revenue.
Airport lounges have become an increasingly important part of airlines’ premium strategies, providing travelers with dedicated space to work or relax along with complimentary food and beverages. For airlines, lounges can help build customer loyalty while supporting premium fares and co-branded credit card programs.
Southwest CEO Bob Jordan has previously acknowledged that the airline loses some customers to competitors because it lacks premium amenities such as lounges and does not serve destinations including London. Jordan has also raised the possibility of additional cabin products and long-haul international service, although those plans remain under consideration.
