Lynchburg Airport Wins $5.26m Federal Grant for Upgrades
Lynchburg Regional Airport received a $5.26 million federal grant to build the infrastructure needed for new hangar development, the city said Thursday.
The funds were awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Infrastructure Grant Program. The program is funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which was signed into law by former President Joe Biden in 2021.
Lynchburg’s airport was one of 339 airports in 44 states and two U.S. territories selected to receive a share of $870 million in federal airport infrastructure funding.
"By building the infrastructure needed for future hangar development, we're creating opportunities to attract aviation businesses, expand aircraft maintenance and repair operations, and strengthen the airport's role as a regional economic asset,” Airport Director Cedric Simon said in a statement.
The award, announced Tuesday as part of the FAA's eighth round of fiscal year 2026 Airport Infrastructure Grant awards, will fund the airport's North Apron Landside Development project, which will prepare the site for future aviation business growth by constructing the roads, utilities, parking and supporting infrastructure needed for new hangar development, the city said in a news release.
The North Apron Landside Development project will create sites for future aviation development by extending access to the airport's existing north apron. The project includes construction of a new access road from Airport Road, parking areas to support future hangar tenants, water and sewer utility extensions, stormwater management infrastructure, relocation of a portion of the airport's perimeter fence, and site preparation for future aircraft hangars and aviation-related development.
The city, which owns the airport, has awarded the construction contract to J and M Infrastructure, a Lynchburg-based company. Once completed, the improvements will provide the infrastructure necessary to support future build-to-lease hangar opportunities at the airport, the city said.
"This grant allows us to make strategic infrastructure investments that position Lynchburg for long-term economic growth," City Manager Wynter Benda said in a statement.
The FAA’s Airport Infrastructure Grant Program provides funding for projects that improve the safety, efficiency, sustainability, and long-term viability of airports across the country.
