Congratulations to Jason Alexander, AUS’s new Deputy Chief of Airport Affairs! As of March, Jason joined our airport team with almost 20 years of experience working at the City of Austin. Most recently, he served as Chief of Staff to the City Manager, advising city leadership on a variety of daily operational matters and providing oversight to the City’s Resilience, Innovation, Sustainability, and Equity Offices.

As the Deputy Chief of Airport Affairs, Jason will support, among other things, the Department’s intergovernmental relations work. In simpler terms, he’ll be helping keep our airport in the good graces of local, state and federal governmental agencies and partners. This requires strong relationships with each agency (including City Council, our Airport Advisory Commission, Congressional representatives, and more) which can take months, even years, to build. In addition to a focused attention on intergovernmental relations, he’ll be working with teams on the airport’s record and information management efforts.

Jason is up for the task – not only does he have the political savviness and charm that’s required of this role, but he checks off all the classic resume-musts that’ll take him far at AUS: a problem-solver, strategic, curious, passionate, resourceful and a hard worker. He's a fan of traveling too.

When asked what he’s looking forward to most, he said, “Applying what I’ve learned and experienced at the City Manager’s Office towards this critical piece of our City’s infrastructure. In return, I’ll get to understand a new department and business operation. Unlike most City of Austin departments, the airport is truly an enterprise, something different. It’s a city unto itself.”

Taking a sneak peek into Jason’s personal life, we won’t look at his high school years as a guitarist in Ephrium, Dallas’s most rockin’ underground band (so far underground that no one knew who they were). Nowadays, we’ll find him spending most of his free time with his son and best friend, Macklin. As Macklin bounces around as an energetic 5-year-old taking to Austin FC Games one day and baseball games the next, Jason is keeping a keen eye on the landscape around him and taking beautiful, professional-grade photos of that landscape (think Town Lake, mysterious woods, the night sky, Coloradoan mountains). In addition to photography, Jason loves to travel. His next trip out of AUS (as an official employee this time)? The west side of Colorado, one of his favorite places to visit, find beauty and reset.

Welcome to AUS, Jason!
