With Flights Being Canceled Nationwide, Here's How Sarasota Bradenton Airport is Faring
Jan. 1—MANATEE — There were nine flight cancellations at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport on Thursday.
On Monday, the peak holiday travel day, there were 11 scrubs.
But you never know about cancellations or delays. On Wednesday, there was only one cancellation.
It's been a busy travel season, complicated by the pandemic.
Most of the cancellations have been because of crew staffing issues, a problem faced by airlines across the country during the surge in COVID-19 cases caused by the omicron variant.
Mark Stuckey, executive vice president of the airport, has some advice for travelers: arrive two hours early to minimize stress and stay in touch with the carrier to check on flight status, even though most flights are arriving on time.
"We are averaging 70 outbound flights and 70 inbound flights a day, a total of 140 operations a day," he said. "Now that we have gotten through the Christmas rush, there is plenty of parking in short-term and long-term parking."
To date, SRQ has had about 244,000 seats booked in December, and a similar number are booked for January. Bookings dip to about 225,000 in February before the peak months of March with 270,000 bookings and April with about 260,000 bookings, Stuckey said.
The heaviest influx of passenger traffic this holiday season has been from the Newark-LaGuardia-JFK airport area, followed by traffic from Chicago.
