Sunday was the busiest day of travel since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic nearly 2 years ago.

On Nov. 28, airports screen 2,451,300 people across the U.S. Of those, 77,365 were in one of New England’s six airports.

TSA Public Affairs spokesperson Lisa Farbstein confirmed on Twitter it was a “new pandemic high” nationally. TSA spokesperson Dan Velez said it was also “the busiest day since the pandemic for New England.”

For the 10 days prior to and including Nov. 28, there were 20.9 million people traveling nationally, Farbstein said, which is about 89% of pre-pandemic levels.

“Continue to get to the airport early,” she tweeted.

A day later, a travel ban imposed by President Joe Biden on seven African countries went into effect due to the Omicron COVID-19 variant, which was classified by the World Health Organization as a “variant of concern.”

The United States restricted travel from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi, according to the White House.

The policy does not apply to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.
