PIT to Hold Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Terminal

Oct. 12—FINDLAY TWP. — Fans of air travel and innovation may be excited to hear that the groundbreaking of a new terminal in Pittsburgh this week, opening the airways to new possibilities from the Steel City.

The Pittsburgh International Airport will be holding a ceremonial groundbreaking event for its new terminal at 2 p.m. Thursday. The ceremony will feature a variety of local and state officials, including Allegheny County Chief Executive Rich Fitzgerald and county Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis.

The groundbreaking will take place at the construction site for the new 700,000 square-foot terminal and transportation complex at PIT, which is currently scheduled to open in 2025. The new structure will be a part of the Terminal Modernization Program, a $1.39 billion project that aims to improve airport facilities and advance the surrounding regions.

Those attending the event must wear a mask at all times and seating will be socially distanced throughout the event. The ceremony will take place underneath a tent, with groundbreaking happening even with rain in the area.

PIT will be home to the first new air terminal designed and constructed after the pandemic, which caused massive shutdowns of air travel.
