Canberra — Australia's international airports are gearing up for the return of air travel, with help from a financial boost from the government.

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce announced 183.65 million dollars (133.38 million US dollars) in funding for the industry, in preparation of international borders reopening.

The country closed its border to almost everyone more than 18 months ago due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Joyce said the aviation industry would play a "vital role" in Australian's economic recovery from Covid-19.

“It’s also important that the sector continues operating now, to maintain the flow of exports and imports and bring Australians home from overseas."

He said with the country's vaccination rates rising, it was getting closer to reopening the border.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan said the government wanted to ensure Australians can travel, with confidence, when the international border opens.

“Australia’s tourism industry is a vital part of our economy and our airlines and airports will be essential as we welcome back international visitors to support the 600,000 jobs and businesses reliant on tourism."

Most of the fund would go towards helping Australia's international passenger airlines maintain core jobs, while the remainder would help airports meet the costs associated with mandated security requirements.

The aviation sector has received more than 5.1 billion dollars in assistance since the pandemic began.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison reiterated last week that an 80 per cent vaccination rate is a prerequisite to reopening the border. On current projections, Australia is expected to reach that threshold in December.
