Qatar Hopes Kabul Airport to Reopen 'Soon,' Foreign Minister Says
Doha — Qatar is hopeful that the Kabul airport in Afghanistan can reopen soon, Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdel-Rahman Al Thani said on Thursday.
"We are still in the evaluation process," the minister told reporters when asked about the airport, adding that Qatar is working with Taliban to identify "gaps and risks" for the airport to operate again.
"We remain hopeful that we will be able to operate it as soon as possible... hopefully in the next few days we will hear some good news," Mohammed said in a press conference in Doha alongside his British counterpart Dominic Raab.
Raab said his country will not be recognizing the Taliban "in the foreseeable future" and that now the priority is "to secure the safe passage of the remaining British nationals but also the Afghans who worked for United Kingdom" and others who remain at risk.
The UK has a new set of strategies that focuses on "making sure Afghanistan is not a haven or harbour to terrorists again, preventing humanitarian crisis" and holding the Taliban to account on their commitment to a more inclusive government, Raab added.
