Jul. 31—GALESBURG — Significant progress has been made on a a permanent home for the National Stearman Fly-In and the National Stearman Foundation at the Galesburg Municipal Airport, but the project won't be completed in time for this year's Fly-In.

The 100,000-square foot hangar is constructed, but much of the interior work is yet to be completed.

"We just ran out of time," said Harrel Timmons, president of the National Stearman Foundation Board. "If there is any way possible, it will be done for next year."

The International Stearman Community Center will serve as Stearman headquarters and a repository for artifacts and memorabilia related to the historic aircrafts to further the board's educational mission.

Though it was hoped the facility would be complete for the 50th annual National Stearman Fly-In this year, rising construction costs have slowed the project.

Timmons said fundraising for the project has gone quite well, including significant contributions from the Galesburg community, but costs have increased 35 percent from initial estimates, bringing the total to $1 million.

"The costs don't stop," Timmons said.

The finished space will have offices for Stearman Fly-In and Foundation officials and serve as a year-round home for Stearman owners and enthusiasts, along with banquet and event space.

Once the building is complete, Timmons said, the 8,000 square feet of open space inside could be used for meetings and conventions.

With a smaller event last year due to COVID-19 and the 50th anniversary this year, organizers expect a large turnout for this year's Fly-In, scheduled for Sept. 6 to Sept. 11.

Timmons said it's possible the new building could be used for some dinners this year.
