Passenger Numbers at Frankfurt Airport Remain Low Amid Pandemic

May 14, 2021

Frankfurt's airport is still in the grips of the coronavirus crisis, with the number of passengers remaining low in April despite the start of the Easter holidays, operator Fraport said on Friday.

Around 984,000 people took off from Germany's largest airport in April - a decline of 84 per cent compared to April 2019, the year before the pandemic began.

However, compared to April 2020 - when the first effects of the crisis were felt - the number of passengers however increased by 423 per cent this year.

In the first four months of this year, passenger numbers declined by 69 per cent, to 3.4 million, compared to last year, and by 83 per cent compared to 2019.

Meanwhile, the cargo business continued to expand, as 201,661 tons of cargo were processed in April - 42.7 per cent more than last year and 13.1 per cent more than in 2019.

At its international airports, for instance in Latin America, Turkey and China, Fraport registered passenger growth, due to the low comparison numbers for 2020. All airports, however, had traffic below their pre-crisis levels.
