More Passengers at Frankfurt Airport in March, but Down on Last Year
Frankfurt Airport saw a slight recovery in passenger traffic in March, with some 243,000 more passengers passing through than in February.
Fraport, the airport's operator, announced Thursday it had counted 925,194 passengers at Germany's biggest air travel hub in March.
There was a surge in flights to Mallorca before Easter.
However, the numbers were still down 56.4 per cent compared to March 2020, when the pandemic and travel restrictions were starting to slow down air traffic from week to week, ultimately bringing it to a standstill.
Meanwhile, the cargo business last month saw a strong upward trend.
The volume of freight and airmail rose by 24.3 per cent year on year to 204,865 tons - around 27,500 tons more than in February.
Fraport boss Stefan Schulte recently forecast the airport would see "under 20 to 25 million" passengers this year.
He estimates that demand will increase "some time in summer."
In 2020, the number of passengers dropped to less than 19 million after the airport had a record-breaking year in 2019 with more than 70 million passengers.
Schulte does not expect to reach that level again until 2025 or 2026.
