Catania Airport Reopens After Etna Eruption

Feb. 17, 2021

Feb. 17—ROME — The Catania airport has reopened after closing due to the eruption of Mount Etna, according to the website of the international airport on the southern Italian island of Sicily.

The airport had previously announced on Twitter that it would reopen at 9 am ( 0800 GMT).

The nearby volcano had erupted for almost an hour the previous evening. Afterwards, runways had to be cleaned of volcanic ash, the airport announced on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday morning, Italian television showed that the sky in the region was blue and clear again.

Authorities continue to monitor the volcano's activity, but the situation was under control, media reports said.
