German Coronavirus Aid Scheme for Airports Approved by Brussels
Brussels (dpa) - A German aid scheme to support airports struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic has been approved by competition authorities, the European Commission said on Tuesday.
"This scheme will enable German authorities at different levels to compensate German airports for the damage suffered as a result of the coronavirus outbreak," said EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager.
"At the same time, it will help them address their liquidity shortages and weather the crisis," she added.
The aviation industry has been particularly hard-hit by the coronavirus crisis, with airport industry association ADV estimating that German airports are currently losing about half a billion euros per month.
The German aid scheme foresees airports that can show financial losses that occurred as a direct result of the pandemic between March 4 and June 30 receiving subsidies.
