Thailand's Phuket Airport Reopens After Virus Closure
Bangkok (dpa) - The airport in the southern Thai island province of Phuket reopened for domestic flights on Saturday, amid the country's efforts to ease measures imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand announced late Friday that domestic flights will resume from midnight on Friday.
However, international passenger flights are still banned until the end of June.
Phuket has reported a total of 227 coronavirus cases to date, with three deaths, according to the province's public relations department. The first flight - operated by Thai VietJet Airline - is scheduled to depart from Bangkok and land in Phuket at 5:25 pm (1025 GMT) on Saturday.
Thailand has recorded 58 deaths from the coronavirus so far and 3,134 confirmed cases, most of which have recovered. The country has reported no local transmission of the virus for 19 days.
