'An Incredible Loss.' TSA Agent at Miami International Airport Dies of COVID-19
A customs agent at Miami International Airport has died from complications of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
Victor Chung, who was a 17-year veteran with the Transportation Security Administration, died earlier Sunday, according to a memo from Daniel Ronan TSA’s federal security director at MIA.
“During his 17 years of service to TSA, Victor led with distinction, dedication and professionalism,” Ronan said. “His leadership, mentorship and his trusting friendship will be sorely missed. This is an incredible loss.”
Ronan said Chung joined TSA in 2002, a year after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, after a career with the Department of Agriculture. He worked in baggage screening before helping Miami’s airport open up its first in-line baggage system.
The Miami Herald could not immediately contact Chung’s family for comment.
Last month, three screening officers had reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 at the Miami Airport. TSA said it had recently started to provide agents with N95 masks and protective eye gear.
As of Sunday evening, Florida reported 26,314 positive cases of the virus. Of the 774 deaths confirmed in Florida, 446 of them were reported in South Florida counties.
