ST. THOMAS — Aggravated travelers who have recently endured long lines at King Airport on St. Thomas are not expected to get a break anytime soon.

According to the Virgin Islands Port Authority, “emergency issues” found during a terminal construction project have forced U.S. Customs and Border Protection pre-departure operations to temporarily relocate to Checkpoint A, near Gate 1.

The move is expected to increase wait times, and travelers are encouraged to arrive at the airport 3 to 4 hours prior to their scheduled departure.

Customs operations at the Blyden Marine Terminal have also been temporarily relocated to the Urman V. Fredericks Marine Terminal in Red Hook.

All foreign passenger vessels, including the ferries from the British Virgin Islands, will clear Customs at Red Hook until the Blyden Terminal checkpoint is reopened.

Cargo vessels will be cleared at the King Airport’s Customs entrance and clearance window, located in the hallway next to the LIAT counter.

Port Authority Executive Director Carlton Dowe said that contractors are working “post-haste” to complete the work necessary to resume normal operations.

A news release from the Port Authority did not indicate how long the repairs will take, or what “emergency measures” are being addressed.
