Berlin (dpa) - The first series of collective tests on technical systems and equipment at the long-delayed Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) began on Monday, more than seven years after the hub's planned opening.

The testing of the equipment, located in the main terminal, is one of the conditions for authorities' approval of the airport. Emergency power and lighting systems, as well as fire detection and alarm systems, have undergone separate tests in recent days.

The German certification company TUeV is responsible for conducting the so-called operating-principle tests.

"The start of the higher-level operating-principle tests in July confirms that opening BER in October 2020 is on schedule," said Engelbert Luetke Daldrup, head of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.
