As the city takes back control of the Palo Alto Municipal Airport at the end of Embarcadero Road, it plans to create a new airport manager position, which includes an annual salary of $140, 000.

Santa Clara County has leased the airport from the city since 1967, and has managed its operations. Now that the county wants to turn the airport back to the city, the city is planning how it will operate the facility.

A key step in taking back control of the airport will be to hire an airport manager by this fall, who will act as the city's liaison to the county and the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, said a report by city Assistant Administrative Services Director Rob Braulik. " (The airport) needs the expertise of an experienced representative 'on the ground' to attend (airport) matters, both administrative and operational," Braulik said.

The airport manager would receive an estimated pay of $140, 000 a year, excluding benefits, according to Braulik's report.

The city plans to take control of the airport during a transition between July 1 of this year and Dec. 31, 2013.
