BWI airport embarks on terminal enhancement program
Baltimore / Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport in the US has broken ground on a $100m project to modernise the passenger terminal.
The terminal enhancement program, expected to be completed by summer 2013, will allow the airport to handle long-term passenger growth.
Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley said that the investment in the airport is paying off, which is evident from recent passenger growth.
"Now it is time to take the next step and improve the terminal so that we are able to accommodate the growth that we are experiencing today and the continued growth we expect in the future," O'Malley said.
Work on the project includes construction of the new, expanded security checkpoints, which would serve Concourses A, B, and C, as well as provide a secure connector between Concourses B and C.
As part of the project the Concourse C facility will be upgraded to accommodate airline gate hold rooms and 8,500ft² new food and retail space.
The planned 9-lane checkpoint will feature latest screening equipment, similar to the existing security checkpoints at Concourses A and B and upon the completion, the existing checkpoint at Concourse C will be demolished.
BWI Marshall Airport executive director Paul Wiedefeld said: "We want to provide a high level of service for our customers, while providing the opportunity for continued growth."
