South Bend International Airport Deploys License Plate Recognition Technology to Modernize Parking Operations
South Bend International Airport (SBN) is introducing a ticketless parking system powered by license plate recognition (LPR) technology as part of its ongoing modernization efforts aimed at improving the passenger experience and streamlining landside operations.
The new system, implemented in partnership with parking management company Interstate Parking, replaces traditional parking tickets with automated vehicle recognition at lot entry and exit points. The conversion of parking lot entrances began March 4 and is expected to be completed within several days, weather permitting.
Airport officials say the technology is intended to reduce delays at parking exits, minimize equipment failures associated with traditional ticketing systems and simplify the overall parking process for travelers.
Under the new system, drivers enter airport parking lots as usual while cameras capture license plate information. Travelers then register their vehicle and payment details through a QR code posted throughout the parking facilities and inside the terminal. Payment is automatically calculated when the vehicle exits the lot, allowing drivers to leave without stopping at a pay station.
Accepted payment methods include major credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Travelers receive digital receipts via text or email.
The system is designed to accommodate a range of user scenarios. Travelers can register their vehicle immediately after parking or wait until returning from their trip, provided registration occurs before exiting the lot. Airport officials note the system is also intended to accommodate passengers who may not know their license plate number or who are short on time when arriving for a flight.
Interstate Parking will deploy on-site staff to assist travelers during the transition period and help familiarize customers with the new process.
According to airport leadership, the upgrade is part of broader efforts to modernize passenger-facing infrastructure at SBN. Parking operations often represent the first and last touchpoint of the airport experience, making efficiency improvements in landside access a priority for many airports seeking to enhance overall traveler satisfaction.
The technology also allows frequent travelers to pre-register multiple vehicles and payment methods, further reducing friction when entering and exiting parking facilities.
South Bend International Airport serves more than 1.5 million combined air and rail passengers annually through its multimodal terminal. The airport currently offers nonstop service to 16 destinations through five airline partners.
