Spirit Airlines’ Inaugural Flight from Indy to Ft. Lauderdale Departs

Nov. 19, 2020

Spirit Airlines launches its newest nonstop flight out of the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) on Nov. 19, departing for Ft. Lauderdale at 10:20 a.m. The inaugural flight becomes one of 14 nonstop daily flights to 10 unique Florida destinations out of Indy.

In addition to Ft. Lauderdale, Spirit offers nonstop flights from Indianapolis to Las Vegas, Orlando, Fort Myers and Tampa.

“This is Spirit’s first nonstop flight from Indianapolis to Ft. Lauderdale,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Sr. Director of Commercial Enterprise Marsha Stone. “For those ready to return safely to the skies and a warm winter destination, Spirit is giving Hoosiers one more option to visit the Sunshine State.”

Currently Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines also offer nonstop flights to Ft. Lauderdale.

“We are thrilled to continue expanding our service, giving our Guests More Go from Indianapolis to the Sunshine State,” said John Kirby, vice president of Network Planning for Spirit Airlines. “In addition to providing non-stop service to South Florida, this new route will also offer connections to 20 major cities in the U.S. through our Fort Lauderdale gateway.”

Passenger traffic has seen an uptick over the past few months, and the aviation industry is working hard to instill confidence in the traveling public during this unprecedented time.

Spirit’s commitment to Safe Travels includes a multi-layered safety approach that requires all passengers and team members to wear face coverings. Each passenger agrees to that policy as part of a health and safety acknowledgement prior to boarding the aircraft. Passengers are also encouraged to practice social distancing while waiting at ticketing, baggage check and during boarding.

Between each flight, enhanced cabin cleaning procedures focus on high-touch areas such as tray tables and armrests. Spirit also uses two EPA-registered fogging treatments to disinfect its aircraft that forms an invisible barrier on all surfaces and kills bacteria and viruses on contact for 30 days – in addition to regular cabin cleaning using hospital-grade disinfectants and anti-bacterial processes. In addition, all of Spirit’s Airbus fleet is equipped with state-of-the-art, high-efficiency particulate air filters that capture 99.97% of particles and filter the air for contaminants every two to three minutes.

The Indianapolis International Airport is also working diligently to ensure a safe and healthy travel experience for Hoosiers. Last week the Indy airport announced it received the Airports Council International’s global Airport Health Accreditation for its efforts to protect the traveling public from COVID-19.

Since March, the Indianapolis Airport Authority has implemented an abundance of measures throughout the terminal and airport campus in response to the pandemic, such as installing "Be KIND, stay six feet behind" signage to guide passengers in social distancing, providing additional hand sanitizing stations for customer convenience, erecting Plexiglass shields in high-traffic areas, increasing cleaning frequency in high-congregation areas, deep cleaning public restrooms hourly using hospital-grade disinfectant, increasing cleaning and sanitization of shuttle buses, and implementing touchless payment procedures wherever possible. In addition, the airport follows Marion County Public Health Department’s guidance, including requiring workers, passengers, and visitors to wear face coverings or masks.
