Chisinau/Budapest — The Hungarian airline Wizz Air is avoiding the airport of the Moldovan capital Chișinău from March 14 for security reasons, according to the civil aviation authority.
The authority in Chișinău said on Monday that it had been informed by the airline by e-mail, adding that they regretted Wizz Air's decision. The republic of Moldova is doing everything to ensure safety in its airspace, it said.
Initially, there was no statement from Wizz Air.
There are growing fears that the Russian war against Ukraine could also spread to neighbouring Moldova. Russian soldiers are stationed in the breakaway Transnistria region. Last week, Russia claimed that Ukraine wanted to attack this small contingent of troops.
As Chișinău is no longer a flight destination, the low-cost airline Wizz Air wants to offer more flights from the Romanian city of Iași near the border, according to media reports.
Wizz Air flies to many cities in Central and South-Eastern Europe.
While all air traffic in Ukraine is cancelled because of the war, Chișinău is one of the closest airports for Ukrainians.
