Laptop Fire on United Flight to Newark Sends Plane Back to San Diego

Feb. 8, 2023

A United Airlines flight en route to Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday morning was rerouted back to San Diego after a laptop fire in the cabin, officials said.

United Airlines Flight 2664, a Boeing 737, took off for Newark before it was diverted and safely returned to its origin, San Diego International Airport, FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro said.

The plane departed at 7:07 a.m. Pacific Standard Time and returned at 7:51 a.m., according to Flight Aware data.

The aircraft declared an Alert 2, which indicates a major difficulty with the aircraft, shortly after its departure, said Sabrina LoPiccolo, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Regional Airport Authority.

“Our crew acted quickly to contain the device and medical personnel met the aircraft upon arrival at the gate,” United Airlines spokeswoman Erin Jankowski said.

Upon arrival in San Diego, four flight attendants were taken to the hospital as a precaution and two customers were evaluated on site, Jankowski said.

The flight has since departed San Diego for a second time, the airline said. It took off at 12:31 p.m. PST and is scheduled to arrive in Newark at 7:48 p.m. Eastern Time, according to Flight Aware data.
