Frontier Airlines Leaving Durango-La Plata County Airport in August

June 28, 2022

Frontier Airlines has announced that it will cease operations at the Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO), effective August 8, 2022. Frontier service between Durango and both Denver International Airport (DEN) and Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) will continue to be offered twice weekly through August 7.

The Frontier Airlines service has operated at DRO since June 2021, following a spring 2021 announcement that the airline would return to the Durango market for the first time since 2014.

"We are disappointed that Frontier service to Denver and Las Vegas will end on August 8,” said Aviation Director Tony Vicari. “However, air service remains strong at Durango-La Plata County Airport. Travelers flying through DRO continue to have access to daily nonstop flights to Dallas and Phoenix on American Airlines, as well as daily nonstop flights to Denver on United Airlines.”

“Frontier’s performance at DRO over the last six months has been lower than expected,” Vicari said. “This weaker than anticipated consumer demand contributed to Frontier’s decision to exit the Durango market at this time.”

The Frontier service to Denver and Las Vegas was part of a record-breaking year at DRO in 2021. A total of 397,293 travelers arrived at or departed from DRO in 2021, with Frontier carrying 5% of all passenger traffic during this period. The first five months of 2022 have seen passenger traffic settle very near to the pre-pandemic 2019 baseline.

“Despite this disappointing news, passenger traffic at DRO through May remains even with pre-pandemic levels, highlighting the ongoing resilience of our market,” Vicari said. “Travelers continue to see the benefits of flying through DRO, and we’re confident our convenient location, comfortable facilities, and strong airline route network will be able to fulfil the air travel needs of our community. We also continue to work with our incumbent airlines, as well as potential new entrants, to attract added air service to Southwest Colorado.”

Travelers with existing reservations on Frontier Airlines at DRO for August 8 or after can cancel online or call 1-602-333-5925 for help with refunds or rebooking.
