Frankfurt (dpa) - More aeroplanes are flying in the skies above Europe as the air travel industry recovers from the coronavirus lockdown that almost brought it to its knees earlier in the year.

Over the course of the week ending on Sunday, the Eurocontrol organization for European aviation counted 90,549 flights, up to 36.6 per cent of the levels seen during the same period last year.

Eurocontrol director general Eamonn Brennan spoke of "sustained traffic growth" in a tweet on Monday, noting that there was a rolling daily average of just under 13,000 flights.

That was 1,383 more than seen last week.

Irish budget airline Ryanair contributed significantly to the rise in traffic, offering on average 1,045 flights per day over the course of last week.
