LATAM Airline Ceases Domestic Operations in Argentina

June 18, 2020

Buenos Aires (dpa) – Bankrupt Chile-based airline LATAM will cease domestic operations in Argentina.

Latin America's biggest airline said on Wednesday it will stop operating flights to 12 destinations in Argentina, though subsidiaries will maintain flights to four international destinations.

The move will require LATAM to lay off about 1,700 employees in Argentina, where the carrier transported 3.1 million passengers last year.

LATAM filed for insolvency on May 26 under Chapter 11 bankruptcy code in the US, after the Covid-19 pandemic decimated passenger demand.

The Argentinian subsidiary was not part of the bankruptcy restructuring plan. But the country was a difficult market for LATAM, which faced competition from flag carrier Aerolineas Argentinas.
