Delta Adds DFW-to-Seattle Flights in Counter to American's Deal with Alaska Airlines

March 4, 2020

Delta Air Lines is adding daily flights from DFW International Airport to Seattle, just weeks after American Airlines announced major upgrades to its Seattle presence.

Delta, which counts SeaTac International Airport in Washington as a stronghold, will fly three round-trip flights between DFW Airport and the Washington state airport starting June 8. Atlanta-based Delta is also boosting service to Seattle from Austin, Orlando, Fla., and introducing a new route from Columbus, Ohio.

Last month, Fort Worth-based American Airlines announced a renewed and boosted partnership with Alaska Airlines that will significantly ramp up American’s access to Seattle. It will also give Alaska customers access to American’s international slate of destinations.

American’s deal with Alaska was a major shot at Delta’s Seattle dominance. Delta responded with three new flights a day from Seattle to American’s home airport. DFW also is American’s biggest hub and one of its most profitable.

Previously, Delta Air Lines customers flying from DFW to Seattle had to detour through Salt Lake City or Minneapolis, which takes about six hours. The route from DFW to Seattle is about 4¼ hours. Delta also flies out of Dallas Love Field, but only to Atlanta.

Delta will use an Airbus A220 for the flight, a smaller, single-aisle airplane that holds 109 passengers.

Delta is also working with SeaTac Airport on a new international arrivals facility there.

American’s renewed deal with Alaska means that Alaska will also be joining the Oneworld alliance headed by American. American also agreed to start a new international trip from Seattle to Bangalore, India, American’s only flight into India.

Delta on Monday also announced a new flight from Seattle to London-Heathrow airport. It serves 56 destinations on 190 flights a day from Seattle.

American Airlines operates about 900 flights a day out of DFW International Airport and makes up about 80% of all air traffic there.
