Feb. 3--MADRID -- An Air Canada plane with 128 passengers on board returned to Madrid on Monday to make an emergency landing after experiencing engine and landing-gear issues.
The Air Canada flight to Toronto suffered the problems shortly after take-off from Madrid, the airline said.
The pilots of the Boeing 767-300 declared an emergency and then flew in circles for four hours over the Spanish capital to lighten the jet's fuel load before safely landing around 7 pm (1800 GMT).
In a statement, Air Canada said only that the aircraft had an "engine issue" and that one of the plane's 10 tyres reportedly ruptured on take-off.
Enaire, the Spanish air traffic control agency, said that parts of the tyre had hit the engine.
