Southwest Plane Evacuated Upon Landing at Chicago's Midway Airport

Passengers were evacuated from a Southwest plane upon arriving in Chicago’s Midway International Airport Monday, after the plane experienced an issue with a system that powers part of the landing gear.

Flight 4448 from Austin experienced an issue “with one of the redundant systems that powers the performance of the main landing gear,” a Southwest spokesperson said in a statement to the Daily News.

The plane experienced a “hydraulic issue following landing,” and the aircraft turned off the runway, a spokesperson from Southwest Airlines told WGN.

“Following a safe landing, the 137 Customers and a Crew of five used airstairs to deplane the aircraft and board buses for the main terminal. There were no injuries onboard,” Southwest said in a statement.

Video shared by WBBM showed one set of tires “visibly deflated.”

Midway International Airport did not immediately respond to The News for comment.

The airline apologized to customers affected by the event.

“We apologize to all Customers onboard for the inconvenience and are working with any connecting Customers whose onward travel plans have changed as a result of this morning’s event,” a spokesperson said in a statement, adding the airline places “nothing higher than the Safety of our Customers and Employees.”
