New luggage restrictions are coming to Australian flag carrier Qantas. Starting immediately on some busy domestic routes, Qantas plans to start weighing carry-on bags at the gate to ensure that passengers aren't sneaking too much on board.

New luggage restrictions are coming to Australian flag carrier Qantas. Starting immediately on some busy domestic routes, Qantas plans to start weighing carry-on bags at the gate to ensure that passengers aren't sneaking too much on board.

Australia's Sydney Morning Herald shared news of the new restrictions early this weekend; later, the story was picked up by The Points Guy, a popular consumer travel blog.

In addition to size restrictions on carry-on bags, many airlines also stipulate weight limits for each parcel brought onto the aircraft. In the case of Qantas, that limit is 7 kg or 15.4 lb per bag. To enforce the weight restrictions, the carrier plans to place scales at gates across Australian airports, similar to how baggage sizers are now common at each jetway worldwide.
