New luggage restrictions are coming to Australian flag carrier Qantas. Starting immediately on some busy domestic routes, Qantas plans to start weighing carry-on bags at the gate to ensure that passengers aren't sneaking too much on board.
Australia's Sydney Morning Herald shared news of the new restrictions early this weekend; later, the story was picked up by The Points Guy, a popular consumer travel blog.
In addition to size restrictions on carry-on bags, many airlines also stipulate weight limits for each parcel brought onto the aircraft. In the case of Qantas, that limit is 7 kg or 15.4 lb per bag. To enforce the weight restrictions, the carrier plans to place scales at gates across Australian airports, similar to how baggage sizers are now common at each jetway worldwide.
