Gyrocopter with 58-Year-Old Pilot Crashes in York County: Police

July 31, 2020

A 58-year-old man was injured Thursday morning when the gyrocopter he was piloting crashed at York Airport in Jackson Township, police said.

The pilot had the aircraft about six inches off the ground and was returning to the runway when it unexpectedly tilted around 6:42 a.m., according to the Northern York County Regional Police Department.

A blade on the propeller hit the ground, causing the gyrocopter to roll and come to a rest in a nearby field, police said.

The pilot — an Abbottstown resident and licensed pilot — was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the he was going to practice take-offs when the crash happened. It’s unclear what caused the gyrocopter to tilt.

The Federal Aviation Administration was notified of the crash.
