No injuries were reported after a helicopter made an emergency landing in a park in suburban Stickney, after first trying to touch down at Midway Airport, officials said.
First responders from Chicago Fire Department’s Battalion 16 were called to an emergency landing at the northwest corner of Midway Airport, 5700 S Cicero Ave., about 1:50 p.m. when a pilot had gotten a "critical warning light,'' according to the Fire Department.
The pilot “decided not to push his luck,” and he tried to land at Midway but ended up about 4 miles north of there.
“Craft failed to make the airfield and landed in park at 40th and Ridgeland in Stickney," the Fire Department said in a tweet. It wasn’t known where the helicopter took off or where its destination was before landing at Horne Field park.
The aircraft, a model R44 II Rotorcraft, was manufactured by the Robinson Helicopter Co. and is owned by CST & Sons LLC, a company from South Barrington, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The company could not be reached immediately.
This story was updated to correct the responding fire department battlion.
