May 12, 2023

Washington — The US government has agreed in principle to the sale of 60 CH-47F Chinook heavy transport helicopters to Germany, according to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency in Washington, which oversees military supply deals.

The US Congress, which must be consulted on the matter, was also informed on Thursday. The notification mentions a price ceiling of $8.5 billion for the completion of the order.

In operation with the defence forces of more than 20 countries, Chinook cargo helicopters are considered workhorses for the rapid air transport of vehicles, personnel and supplies.

The CH-47, which entered service with the US military in 1962, is easily recognizable by its characteristic banana shape and two main rotors, and can carry more than 11 tons of cargo or up to 55 passengers.

According to the agreement, the first Chinooks may be available to Germany's Bundeswehr armed forces by 2027.
