Fighter-Jet Training Over Nantucket Rattles Windows

Feb. 5, 2020

(Feb. 4, 2020) It's a bird . . . It's a plane . . . A pair of Massachusetts Air National Guard F-15 fighter jets training over the island Tuesday afternoon rattled windows and surprised a number of islanders on an otherwise quiet early-February day.

The jets, from the Air National Guard's 104th Fighter Wing based in Westfield, along with a Cessna 172 from the Civil Air Patrol, were involved in a simulated exercise in which the small plane violated a temporary flight restriction similar to those imposed during former vice president Joe Biden's visits to the island Thanksgiving week, and was escorted to the airport by the fighters.

The exercise, which got underway just before 3 p.m., lasted about 10 minutes and could be seen over downtown Nantucket, Nantucket Harbor and near the airport.

Nantucket Memorial Airport was fully aware of the exercise, airport officials said.
