Lufthansa’s “Green Fares” have proven to be a big hit with flyers who want to travel sustainably.

The Lufthansa Group is the world’s first airline to offer a flight fare that offsets individual flight-related CO₂ emissions.

The new Green Fares were first introduced in mid-February and since then, some 200,000 consumers have opted for the special flights. The airline group states the route with the highest number of Green Fares bookings was Zurich- London with SWISS, followed by Hamburg- Munich with Lufthansa.

Lufthansa achieved the Green Fare flights by using 20 percent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and 80 percent by contributing to high-quality climate protection projects. Travelers who booked the Green Fares were also offered additional status miles and a free rebooking option.

Several other airlines are offering Green Fares as an option to travelers. Emission offsetting options available to more than 730,000 flights annually within Europe, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia have been booked through Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Edelweiss, Eurowings Discover and Air Dolomiti.

The Lufthansa Group offers guests various options to continue their efforts in offsetting the CO₂ emissions of an individual flight. Along with the Green Fare, several other options are available through the booking portal for travelers, including making individual contributions during the flight or afterward.

The group reports that three percent of passengers offset CO₂ emissions through one of the offers along the travel chain. By the end of the year, the airline group hopes to have five percent of its passengers travel more sustainably.

The passenger contributions to the airline going green have already seen an increase. Last year, passengers were able to offset 43,900 tons of CO₂ by purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel and about 380,000 tons of CO₂ through long-term climate protection projects.

The green fares are another way Lufthansa has actively supported global climate and weather research for many years. The airline aims to halve its net CO₂ emissions by 2030 and achieve a neutral CO₂ balance by 2050.
