Alaska Airlines Adds Recyclable Cups

Alaska Airlines passengers will now sip coffee from high-tech plastic cups.

Currently the airline gets its paper cups for in-flight service from a manufacturer in China. The new cups, made by Washington-based MicroGreen Corp., reportedly will cost one third less, weigh half as much, insulate twice as well, and be completely recyclable. MicroGreen hopes to add more airline customers in the months ahead.

The cups are made from polyethylene terephthalate plastic, commonly known as PET. PET is the plastic used to make plastic beverage bottles.

The company has sold the cups through Costco since 2012.
